Kurenti are creatures from Slovenian folklore and are seen as symbols of reawakening & good luck. Kurentovanje is a carnival that celebrates the Kurenti creatures that are said to scare away winter. Kurentovanje is an 11-day rite of spring and fertility event originating in Ptuj, Slovenia – the oldest city in the region. The Kurenti wear massive sheepskin garments with a chain of bells hung around their waist — resulting in great noise to “chase away winter.” The Kurenti wear heavy boots while their head is covered by a towering furry hat festooned with ribbons, and a mask typically sporting a long, red tongue.
